Oka Yamudi Prema Kadha Review: Dulquer’s Quirky Romance Falls Short

Oka Yamudi Prema Kadha Review: Plot Overview

There’s no denying Dulquer Salman’s craze in Malayalam cinema. In 2019, he starred in Oru Yamandan Premakadha, directed by Noufal, which has now been released on the OTT platform Aha with the Telugu title Oka Yamudi Prema Kadha. Streaming since the 5th of this month, the film follows Lallu (Dulquer), a carefree young man who defies his father’s expectations of academic success and discipline. Instead, he spends his days drinking and hanging out with his friends—Vicky, Delhi, and Krishnamurthy—while working odd jobs like painting under Krishnamurthy’s leadership.

Lallu’s younger brother is well-educated and employed, but family pressure dictates that Lallu must marry first. Enter Jasna (Samyuktha Menon), who relentlessly pursues him, but Lallu insists he’ll only marry when he feels a “spark.” That spark seemingly arrives when he sees a missing person ad for a woman named Diya (Nikhila Vimal). Determined to find her, Lallu embarks on a quest, uncovering unexpected truths along the way.

Oka Yamudi Prema Kadha Review: Analysis

No matter the story, a film should primarily entertain. Even if the hero is busy with social service, a romantic subplot is expected—be it through songs or scenes. Here, the heroine’s absence for most of the runtime tests the audience’s patience. She finally appears just before the climax, but the director delivers a major twist, denying viewers the conventional happy reunion they might expect.

The title Oka Yamudi Prema Kadha (A Love Story of Yama) stems from Lallu being a “miracle child” who survived birth complications, earning him the nickname “Yama” (the god of death). The logic behind this naming is unclear, leaving viewers mildly perplexed.

Oka Yamudi Prema Kadha Review: Performance & Technical Aspects

The cast consists of seasoned actors, but their roles lack depth. Dulquer Salman charms as the rebellious Lallu, while Nikhila Vimal’s limited screen time leaves little impact. Samyuktha Menon does her best with an underdeveloped character.

Sukumar’s cinematography and Bijibal’s background score are decent but unremarkable. Johnkutty’s editing feels functional rather than innovative. The film’s technical aspects don’t elevate the already weak narrative.

Oka Yamudi Prema Kadha Review: Verdict

Director Noufal attempts something unconventional with the title and narrative structure, but the execution falters. While the initial setup intrigues, the story fails to engage, making it hard for audiences accustomed to conventional storytelling to connect.
