Jetlee Movie Review: Turbulence All the Way

Director Ritesh Rana, known for his success with the Mathu Vadalara series, teams up with comedian Satya for Jetlee. While the expectations were high for a quirky, high-stakes comedy thriller, the film struggles to take off. Despite a capable cast and technical crew, Jetlee suffers from a weak script and repetitive humor that fails to land with the audience.

Jetlee Movie Review

After carving a niche for himself as a stellar comedian, Satya takes center stage in Jetlee. Directed by Ritesh Rana, who earned a reputation for unique storytelling with the Mathu Vadalara franchise, this film arrives with significant hype. Let’s dive into the review to see if this flight delivers a smooth ride or hits heavy turbulence.

Plot Overview

The story revolves around Prajapathi (Ajay), a businessman who flees the country after defrauding the public in a massive bank scam. Under pressure, Minister Melkoti (Srinivas Vadlamuni) tasks the intelligence department with bringing him back. Aware of threats to his life, Prajapathi pretends to surrender, plotting an escape during transit.

While he is being extradited from Dubai to Kochi, an attempt is made on his life mid-flight. Enter Dr. Vedavyas (Satya), a passenger appearing to be mentally unstable. Who is Vedavyas? How does he protect Prajapathi? What terrors await the passengers in the air, and how do Agent Shivani (Rhea Singha) and a mysterious character played by Vennela Kishore fit into this puzzle? The answers form the crux of the Jetlee Movie.

Direction and Storytelling

Director Ritesh Rana attempts to blend the thriller genre with his signature brand of comedy. However, Jetlee falters due to a lack of novelty and a wafer-thin storyline. Unlike his previous hits, the humor here feels forced and often irritating. The entire film is confined to an airplane, and while the director populates the cabin with various characters, none are well-defined or meaningful. The screenplay feels like “convenience writing,” where things happen simply because the director wants them to, rather than following a logical flow.

Performances

Satya tries his best to carry the film with his timing, but the material lets him down. Aside from a few witty one-liners, his performance doesn’t leave the mark we’ve come to expect from him. Vennela Kishore is largely wasted in a role that adds little value; one feels he should start being more selective with such scripts. The rest of the cast, including Ajay and Rhea Singha, deliver functional performances, but the poor character sketches give them very little room to perform.

Technical Aspects

On the technical front, the film has some saving graces. Kaala Bhairava’s background score and music provide the necessary tension, and the cinematography effectively captures the claustrophobic setting of a flight. However, these elements cannot save a film burdened by tedious editing and a repetitive narrative.

Visuals and Comedy

The film relies heavily on social media memes, spoofs, and one-liners. While the first half manages to elicit a few chuckles, the second half becomes an endurance test. The comedy feels outdated—so much so that a joke involving “Babarthasth” (a play on a popular comedy show) actually makes the audience miss the quality of TV comedy. By the time the flight finally lands in the climax, the relief felt by the characters on screen is mirrored by the audience in the theater.

Jetlee Movie Review: Overall Verdict

Jetlee is a disappointing outing from a promising director. With a weak plot and lackluster humor, every scene tests the viewer’s patience. The “thrill” is missing, and the “comedy” is largely flat. Ultimately, this flight fails to reach its destination.
